ABOUT THE PROJECT

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) joyfully introduced a new 4,000-square-foot Ronald McDonald Family Room at Advocate Children’s Hospital. Situated next to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Children’s Hematology/Oncology Infusion Center, this marks RMHC-CNI’s fourth Family Room.

CHALLENGE
  • Honor donors while creating a whimsical interior design throughout the space
  • Harmonize many donation needs throughout the 4,000 sf space
  • Follow a fabrication process that aligned with the hospital’s protocol
  • Stay within a modest budget

Result: A Haven for Families

Anticipating over 600 family check-ins and 16,000 visits in its first year, the space features four private sleeping quarters with ensuite bathrooms, a communal kitchen, a dining room, and a living area—a haven for families. We infused whimsical interior design throughout the space, creatively honoring each donor.

We focused on providing a cheerful and recognizable atmosphere, highlighting the Chicago skyline to keep spirits bright. The city is adorned with colorful buildings, giant mushrooms, and imaginative characters like cycling hotdogs and skateboarding pizza slices. To bring this vision to life, we enlisted the talents of Colin and Sarah Walsh, a husband-and-wife duo, both artists at Hallmark. Together, they crafted this fun yet serene space that brings joy to all who visit.
