ABOUT THE PROJECT
The addition of a Ronald McDonald House within the Renée Schine Crown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit allows families the ability to remain close to their loved ones during their stay at Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital. In addition to five bedrooms with bathrooms, a children’s play area, a kitchenette, and a family lounge, the house features everything families might need during their stay. It offers the comforts of home and space for self-care, which is vital to their wellbeing.
CHALLENGE
- Create a playful donor recognition experience
- Space needs to include the living room, reception desk, and kitchen
- Include a sleep area that relates visually to the commons area but is quiet and peaceful
- Be responsive to many stakeholders to make sure we provide solutions quickly and with respect to the different parties involved
Result: Comforts of Home
We designed a bright and cheerful space for the commons area to make it feel like a home inside a hospital. Upon entering, a sunny greeting awaits, complemented by a neon welcome sign. The walls are adorned with a cheerful garden featuring life-sized flowers and friendly woodland creatures. Accent walls show off shooting stars and swirling clouds, creatively honoring the generous donors. It’s a highly colorful and welcoming space, and we were honored to be part of the project.
