ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Kwun Tong Ronald McDonald House is conveniently located near the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital and is expected to provide a home away from home for 1,200 families with sick children who need urgent and high-level medical treatment at the hospital per year. Parents staying at the House can focus on caring for their children, saving time on frequent commuting to and from the hospital and their own homes. An RMH as significant as the Kwun Tong required many donors who deserved proper recognition.
CHALLENGE
- Design, fabricate, and develop an installation plan for two very complex, two-story donor walls
- Complete the project during a global pandemic
- Manage language barriers and overseas construction restraints
- Keep the overall mission of RMH in mind
Result: Rooted in Joy
Despite numerous barriers, this project was perfectly executed, bringing joy to everyone at the Kwun Tong House, including the donors. Fabrication concepts were designed, tested, and produced in the United States, then shipped to China for a local fabrication team to duplicate to the satisfaction of RMH and our design team. Installation was meticulously planned, following a paint-by-numbers system to ensure the hundreds of parts were assembled exactly as designed. Due to COVID restraints, our team was not allowed a site visit, and everything was handled online through virtual communication.
As you’ll see below, our designs included a vibrant two-story tree filled with 2D animals, insects, vegetation, and playful friends. Another large 2D installation took imagination to the skies using images of planes, rockets, balloons, and helicopters. Donor names were creatively woven throughout the art, shining a light on their generosity.
